The nose is the most prominent facial feature. If it is misshapen or out of proportion with the other structures of the face, the nose can distract from an overall pleasant aesthetic. Unfortunately, this situation can affect an individual’s confidence and self-esteem. Children and teens are frequently teased for an unusual nose. Adults, uncomfortable with their appearance, may find themselves shying away from social situations. Unfortunately, the only way to change the aesthetic appeal of the nose is through a surgical intervention.
Rhinoplasty is an invasive procedure designed to dramatically improve the look of the nose. The surgical procedure can be used to correct a variety of aesthetic problems such as a humped nasal bridge, a bulbous tip, or poorly sized nostrils, as well as a nose disproportionate in size. In addition to the outward appearance, Rhinoplasty can also correct impaired nasal function such as chronic congestion or difficulty breathing.
The Rhinoplasty is often considered one of the most difficult cosmetic procedures performed today. Through more than 10 years of experience, Dr. Moynihan — one of the top rhinoplasty surgeons in Chicago — has developed his own, innovative techniques for nasal improvements. His Rhinoplasty in Chicago, IL is considered among the safest and most effective available. As leaders in the field of Rhinoplasty, Gold Coast Plastic Surgery’s procedures are sought by patients around the Chicago area, as well as nationally and internationally.
Have you ever wondered what you would look like if you didn’t have that hump on your nasal bridge, a shorter tip, or a less wide bridge and nostrils? Well now you can! At Gold Coast Plastic Surgery we have the most advanced technology to take your actual photo and image it to show you what you can look like after surgery. This is a great way for patients to communicate their desires and concerns to Dr. Moynihan while reviewing your actual photos.
Common Rhinoplasty Indications
Dr. Moynihan’s Rhinoplasty in Chicago will take between one and four hours to complete, under general anaesthesia. The procedure is normally performed on an outpatient basis at a nearby, accredited day surgery center. The same afternoon, patients are able to rest and heal in the comfort of their own home.
The Closed Rhinoplasty procedure utilizes small incisions on the inside of the nostrils. Through these, Dr. Moynihan will remove excess tissue and sculpt the cartridge, as needed. The incisions are then closed with dissolving sutures.
An Open Rhinoplasty is performed using a small, Trans-Columellar incision at the base of the nose, between the nostrils. From this point, Dr. Moynihan will excise excess skin, reshape the cartilage, or place a nasal implant. Once corrections have been made, the incisions are sutured closed. Temporary scarring does occur, although these are well hidden within the natural curvature of the nose.
After the Rhinoplasty procedure, patients will go to the recovery room to wake from anaesthesia. They may initially feel groggy and tired, as well as nauseous. A feeling of congestion or a “head cold” is common
The first 24 hours after surgery are the most difficult part of the recovery process. Knowing what to expect can ensure stress-free recuperation: Rhinoplasty Recovery
The Rhinoplasty is considered a safe, effective procedure for corrective aesthetic and functional problems of the nose. As it is an invasive procedure, however, there is always the small chance for complications. The risks from Rhinoplasty, although rare, can include excess bleeding, infection, and scarring. By choosing a reputable, well-trained cosmetic surgeon, the chance for complications will be greatly reduced.

Rhinoplasty, also known as nasal surgery or a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to alter the external appearance of the nose. Changes may include a reduction or increase in the overall size, the removal of a hump, alterations of a bulbous nasal tip, or repair of poorly shaped nostrils. Functional problems such as chronic congestion can also be corrected through Rhinoplasty.
Healthy individuals who are seeking an improvement in the appearance of the nose may make a good candidate for Rhinoplasty. Ideal candidates will have realistic expectations for their procedure.

IV sedation or general anesthesia is used for Rhinoplasty.
Most Rhinoplasty cases are performed with a Closed technique, in which all incisions are made on the inside of the nose. If an Open Rhinoplasty technique is used, an additional small incision is made on the skin between the nostrils.
The surgical time for Rhinoplasty will depend on the complexity of the particular case. Generally speaking, Rhinoplasty may take anywhere from one and a half to four hours to complete.
For most Rhinoplasty cases, the incisions are made on the inside of the nose; this technique is referred to as a Closed Rhinoplasty. In some cases, an additional small incision is made on the skin between the nostrils, which is referred to as an Open Rhinoplasty.
Closed Rhinoplasty, in which all incisions are confined to the inside of the nose, results in no visible scarring. For an Open Rhinoplasty, there will be a small, well-concealed scar on the underside of the nose, between the nostrils.
Patients may experience some discomfort after a Rhinoplasty. More specifically, the nose and head may ache for the first few days. Dr. Moynihan will prescribe medication can help to manage this.
Patients can expect their Rhinoplasty recovery time to take about seven days. Bruising and swelling are common, especially around the eyes. The majority of swelling will begin to fade in about five to nine days. After five days, external splint and stitches will be removed.
Patients normally feel well enough to return to work about seven days after a Rhinoplasty procedure.
After a Rhinoplasty, you will be able to resume light exercise after about 10 days.
The stitches are removed one week after the Rhinoplasty procedure.
The Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure, therefore has the chance for complications including infection, scarring, cosmetic asymmetry, septal perforation, and epistaxis (nosebleed).
Patients will need to check with their own insurer. However, Rhinoplasty performed for purely cosmetic reasons is typically not covered by insurance. Some coverage may be available when treating breathing problems or deformities.
