PRP is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that uses your body’s own natural ability to heal itself. If you want to improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, or scars without surgery, platelet-rich plasma injections can work wonders on skin quality and resilience.

Restore your youthful glow with PRP therapy

With quite a number of non-invasive cosmetic treatments easily accessible these days, one could be confused and overwhelmed by all the options. One of the latest advances in skin rejuvenation, PRP injections have become extremely popular. Some feel they have finally found the ever-elusive “fountain of youth” with this therapy and are delighted to see the facial skin becoming firmer, more supple, and youthful.

First-time patients who come in for a PRP treatment consultation at Gold Coast Plastic Surgery are often surprised to learn that PRP therapy actually involves using their own blood cells and plasma for the treatment.

Boost collagen and elastin levels – the natural way to rejuvenate skin.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy uses your own blood cells and plasma to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. These are two naturally occurring components in your body that are responsible for keeping your skin supple and healthy. With the help of collagen and elastin and your body’s natural healing response, the new skin that is generated will be practically blemish-free. It will be younger-looking, giving you an overall rejuvenated appearance.

PRP Therapy Reminders

If you are considering a PRP treatment, here are a few reminders to take note of:

  • Tell your provider if you are taking regular medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood-thinning agents like vitamin E or fish oil supplements that may cause bleeding or affect the healing progress. Your doctor may advise you to stop taking these medications one week before your scheduled treatment.
  • Provide a copy of your medical history if requested. Your doctor will want to find out if you are being treated or have been treated for certain diseases or illnesses that may make you ineligible for the procedure, such as facial cancer, dermatological diseases, blood disorders, and platelet abnormalities.
  • Tell your provider if you smoke. They may request that you refrain from smoking before your procedure and until your skin has fully recovered, as smoking may interfere with your body’s natural healing process.

PRP treatment healing and recovery

After the procedure, you may experience redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, and numbness at the injection site or target area. These should resolve on their own in three to five days following your treatment. Clients are reminded not to touch the injection site and surrounding areas for at least 24 hours. We also advise you to sleep on your back with your head elevated on a pillow for at least two nights following treatment. Your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding post-treatment care, and it is important that you follow these precisely to prevent infection or damage to your skin.

How long does a PRP treatment take?

The procedure itself takes about one hour to complete. The therapy is a three-step process. First, the doctor will draw blood from your arm. Next, the blood will be taken to a laboratory to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of your blood. And finally, the plasma is injected back into your body in the target areas. Some clients are given a combination of PRP and microneedling treatments to achieve the best results. Your provider may develop a treatment or therapy plan specific to your needs to help you reach your aesthetic goals.

When will I start to see results?

Results may begin to appear a few weeks after the procedure, and these usually last for up to 18 months. For optimal results, first-time clients may be advised to undergo several sessions during their initial treatment. Generally, three sessions are recommended, and these are given at six-week intervals to allow the skin to heal and recover between sessions. To maintain results, your provider may recommend follow-up treatments every three to six months, depending on your body’s response to treatment as well as your aesthetic and treatment goals.
