(312) 988-9300 Virtual Consultations Available

With quite a number of non-invasive cosmetic treatments easily accessible these days, one could be confused and overwhelmed with all the choices presented them. Perhaps the best approach is to check out what’s currently trending or what patients are raving about; and these days, it’s PRP treatment. Some consider say they have finally found the ever-elusive “fountain of youth” in the therapy, even calling it the “vampire facial” because of how it restores one’s youthful glow.

But taking aside the hype, is PRP therapy everything that patients claim it is, or perhaps even more? In order to understand how these claims came about, it’s best to look at what PRP treatment is and what it can actually do for your skin.

PRP Treatment in Chicago

First-time patients who come in for a PRP treatment consultation at Gold Coast Plastic Surgery are often surprised to learn that a PRP therapy actually involves using their own blood cells and plasma for the treatment.

Briefly, a PRP treatment or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is administered on patients looking to enhance common signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines and keep these at bay for a while. Common issues that this type of cosmetic procedure effectively addresses include the following:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Acne scars
  • Dark circles around and under the eyes
  • Stretch marks

For those looking to improve skin texture and complexion as well as those who wish to have a full head of hair once again, may benefit from a PRP treatment in Chicago at Gold Coast Plastic Surgery as well.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy uses your own blood cells and plasma, as mentioned above, to stimulate collagen and elastin production. These are two naturally occurring components in the body that are responsible for keeping the skin supple and healthy. With collagen and elastin production, and the body’s natural healing response, new skin that is generated will practically be blemish free and younger looking, thus giving your skin an overall rejuvenated appearance.

PRP Therapy Reminders

If you are considering a PRP treatment, here are a few reminders to take note of:

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking regular medications like aspirin and ibuprofen or other blood-thinning agents like vitamin E and/or fish oil supplements that may cause bleeding and/or affect healing progress. Your doctor may advise you to stop taking these medications one week before your scheduled treatment.
  • Provide your doctor with a copy of your medical history, if requested. Your doctor will want to find out if you are being treated or have been treated for certain diseases or illnesses that may make you ineligible for the procedure like facial cancer, dermatologic diseases, blood disorders, and platelet abnormalities, among others.
  • Tell your doctor if you smoke. He may tell you stop prior to your procedure, and also post-treatment, as smoking may interfere with your body’s natural healing process

PRP Procedure

The procedure itself takes about one hour to complete. The therapy is a three-step process. First, the doctor will draw blood from your arm. Next, the blood will be taken to a laboratory to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the layers. And finally, the plasma is injected back into the patient’s body; but this time around, the plasma is injected into the target area(s).

Some patients are given a combination of PRP and microneedling treatments to achieve the best results. With that said, your doctor may develop a treatment or therapy plan specific to your needs to help you reach your aesthetic goals.

PRP treatment healing and recovery

After the procedure, you may experience redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, and numbness on the injection site or target area. These should resolve on their own in three to five days following your treatment.

Patients are reminded not to touch the injection site and surrounding areas for at least 24 hours. It is also advised that patients sleep on their back with their head elevated on a pillow for at least 48 hours after treatment. Your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding post-treatment care, and it is important that you strictly follow these to prevent infection or causing damage to the skin.

Results may begin to appear a few weeks after the procedure, and these usually last up to 18 months. First-time patients may be advised to undergo several sessions during their initial treatment to achieve optimal results. Usually, three sessions are recommended and these are given at six-week intervals to allow the skin to heal and recover.

To maintain results, your doctor may recommend follow-up treatments every three to six months, depending on your body’s response to treatment as well as your aesthetic and treatment goals.
