One of the clearest signs of aging typically first appears in the eye region, adding years, if not decades, to an otherwise youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty, commonly called an eyelid lift, is a surgical treatment that reduces – and in most cases totally eliminates – excess skin and fatty deposits from the lower and upper eyelid region. This surgical treatment can remarkably enhance a patient’s appearance, creating a rejuvenated and youthful look for a diverse population of patients.
Blepharoplasty is a highly effective standalone procedure, but it is commonly paired with other surgical and non-surgical treatments, including mini lifts, brow lifts, and Botox and dermal fillers, with tremendous success. Patients who are in good overall health – good cardiovascular condition and who are a healthy weight – and who would like improvement with droopy upper eyelids and/or persistent puffiness in the lower eyelids are considered good candidates for eyelid surgery.
How Blepharoplasty is Performed
Blepharoplasty performed on the upper eyelid involves incisions being created within the upper eyelid crease so that excess skin and tissue can be removed with minimal or no noticeable scarring. For the lower eyelids, the incisions are placed either just below the bottom eyelash lines or on the inner portion of the lower eyelid. Once the appropriate amount of tissue has been removed in order to achieve the desired result, the incisions are sutured closed. The patient may be given either general anesthesia or a local anesthesia combined with sedation, depending upon which is deemed more appropriate for the patient. The surgery typically takes approximately two hours, depending upon the extent of the correction and whether the patient is having a single or double blepharoplasty procedure.
Recovery for blepharoplasty may take approximately two weeks. The patient can expect to return to work and normal, non-strenuous activities within 14 days if there are no complications. (Patients are encouraged to wait 4-6 weeks before attempting vigorous exercise or heavy lifting.) Pain and swelling can typically be successfully addressed with the use of cold compresses and over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammation relievers, though excessive pain may be managed through prescription pain medications.
While recovery is typically smooth for the vast majority of patients, any incidences of excessive swelling, bleeding, or discomfort that cannot be managed with prescribed medications should be addressed immediately. However, following the surgeon’s recovery protocols diligently should mitigate complications.
