Rhinoplasty, also referred to as nasal surgery or a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to alter the external appearance of the nose. The nose may be altered by reducing or increasing the overall size, removing a hump, decreasing the span of the nostrils, changing the tip of the nose, changing the bridge of the nose, or changing the angle between the upper lip and the nose. Good candidates for rhinoplasty include healthy patients who are looking to improve the appearance of the nose and have realistic goals which are achievable through surgery.

Dr. Moynihan performs Chicago rhinoplasty in an outpatient surgical center or hospital using IV sedation or general anesthesia. Depending on the complexity of the particular case, the procedure can take anywhere from one and a half to four hours to complete. The majority of procedures are performed with a closed rhinoplasty technique in which all incisions are confined to the inside of the nose. The open rhinoplasty technique involves incisions made on the inside of the nose along with a small incision made on the skin between the nostrils. Once the incisions are made, Dr. Moynihan uses cartilage-conserving techniques to refine the nose while allowing for an excellent functional result as well.

Recovery after rhinoplasty takes about seven days. Some swelling and bruising may occur around the eyes. Most of the noticeable swelling will fade in about two weeks. Any discomfort that patients experience can be controlled with medication. Dressings, splints and stitches are removed in about one week. Most patients can return to work in eight days. Light exercise may be resumed in about one week and more strenuous exercise in about two weeks.
