Q - What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, also known as nasal surgery or a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure which alters the external appearance of the nose. Changes may include a reduction or increase in the overall size, the removal of a hump, a change in the tip or the bridge of the nose, a change in the angle between the nose and upper lip, or a decrease in the width of the nostrils.

Q - Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
Healthy individuals who are seeking an improvement in the appearance of the nose may be good candidates for rhinoplasty. It’s essential that patients have realistic goals which can be achieved through surgery.

Q - What happens during the rhinoplasty consultation?
During the consultation, the structure of your nose and face will be evaluated, your medical history taken, and your goals discussed. Aspects of the procedure such as the anesthesia, the recovery, the risks, and the costs will be explained.

Q - Where is rhinoplasty performed?
Dr. Moynihan performs rhinoplasty in an outpatient surgical center or hospital.

Q - What is the anesthesia used for rhinoplasty?
IV sedation or general anesthesia is used for rhinoplasty.

Q - How is rhinoplasty performed?
Most rhinoplasty cases are performed with a closed technique in which all incisions are made on the inside of the nose. If an open technique is used, an additional small incision is made on the skin between the nostrils.

Q - How long is the surgical time for rhinoplasty?
The surgical time for rhinoplasty will depend on the complexity of the particular case. Generally speaking, rhinoplasty may take anywhere from one and a half to four hours to complete.

Q - Where are the incisions made for rhinoplasty?
For most rhinoplasty cases, the incisions are made solely on the inside of the nose, which is referred to as closed rhinoplasty. In some cases, an additional small incision is made on the skin between the nostrils, which is referred to as open rhinoplasty.

Q - Will I have scars after undergoing rhinoplasty?
Closed rhinoplasty, in which all incisions are confined to the inside of the nose, results in no visible scarring. For open rhinoplasty, there will be a small scar that is well-concealed on the underside of the nose between the nostrils.

Q-How much pain occurs after rhinoplasty?
Patients may experience some discomfort. More specifically, the nose and head may ache for the first few days. Medication can help to manage this.

Q-What is the recovery like after undergoing rhinoplasty?
Patients can expect a recovery of about seven days after rhinoplasty. Bruising and swelling are common and may occur around the eyes. The majority of swelling will begin to fade in about two weeks. After about one week, the dressings, splints and stitches will be removed.

Q - How much time should I plan to take off from work after my rhinoplasty procedure?
You should plan on being out of work for about eight days.

Q - Can I exercise after my rhinoplasty procedure?
You should be able to resume light exercise after about one week, though more strenuous activities will need to be postponed for about two weeks.

Q - When are the stitches removed after the rhinoplasty procedure?
The stitches are removed after one week.

Q - Are there any risks associated with undergoing rhinoplasty?
All surgery carries some risk. For rhinoplasty, this may include the risk of infection, cosmetic asymmetry, septal perforation, and epistaxis (nosebleed).

Q - Will my insurance company cover the cost of rhinoplasty?
Patients will need to check with their own insurer. However, rhinoplasty performed for purely cosmetic reasons is typically not covered by insurance. Some coverage may be available when treating breathing problems or deformities.
