Q - What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure which alters the shape of the ears and can improve the appearance of asymmetric or protruding ears.

Q - Who is a good candidate for otoplasty?
Healthy individuals with asymmetric or protruding ears may be good candidates for otoplasty. The procedure may be performed on children which can help to spare them the social ridicule that is often associated with large or protruding ears. The ideal age in young patients is four or five as the ears are mature in size at that point.

Q - Are there any age restrictions for undergoing otoplasty?
Otoplasty may be performed on children as young as four or five years of age.

Q - What happens during the otoplasty consultation?
During the consultation, your ears will be examined, your medical history taken, and your goals discussed. A technique will be recommended and all aspect explained including the anesthesia, the recovery, the risks, the costs and so on.

Q - Where is otoplasty performed?
Dr. Moynihan can perform otoplasty at his office-based facility or at an outpatient surgical center.

Q - What is the anesthesia used for otoplasty?
Local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or sedation may be used for otoplasty.

Q - How is otoplasty performed?
For otoplasty, a small incision is made in the crease behind the ear. The ear is then reshaped to a more pleasing appearance with the use of permanent sutures.

Q - How long is the surgical time for otoplasty?
Otoplasty takes one to two hours to perform.

Q - Where are the incisions made for otoplasty?
The incisions for otoplasty are small and are located in the crease behind the ear.

Q - Will I have scars after undergoing otoplasty?
The scars resulting from otoplasty are small and are well-hidden behind the ear in the natural crease.

Q - How much pain occurs after otoplasty?
Patients may experience some discomfort after otoplasty. The ears may throb or ache for a few days. Medication can be taken to manage any discomfort.

Q - What is the recovery like after undergoing otoplasty?
The recovery after otoplasty usually takes three to seven days. Patients may experience some throbbing or aching of the ears. Swelling and redness may also occur. Within a few days after surgery, the bandage will be removed and will be replaced with a headband-like dressing.

Q - How much time should I plan to take off from work after undergoing otoplasty?
Patients should plan on being out of work or school for three to seven days.

Q - Can I exercise after my otoplasty procedure?
Light exercise may be resumed one week after otoplasty, though more strenuous exercise will need to be postponed for about two weeks.

Q - When are the stitches removed after the otoplasty/ procedure?
The sutures used for otoplasty are dissolving and need not be removed.

Q - Are there any risks associated with otoplasty?
All surgery carries some risk. For otoplasty, this may include the risk of cosmetic asymmetry, infection, and hematoma.

Q - Will my insurance company cover the cost of otoplasty?
Patients will need to check with their own insurer, though otoplasty is occasionally covered by insurance.
