Q - What is lip augmentation?
Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure which can enhance the size and shape of the lips on either a temporary or permanent basis. There are a variety of injectable fillers which may be used to enhance the lips including Restylane, Radiance and fat injection. There are also implants which come in the form of a sheet that is surgically placed in the lips and these include Alloderm, Dermaplant, fascia and Gore-Tex.

Q - Who is a good candidate for lip augmentation?
Men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of undersized lips may be good candidates for lip augmentation. It’s often advised that patients first undergo a temporary procedure which will allow them to evaluate the lips in the augmented state before proceeding with a permanent procedure.

Q - What is fat injection?
Fat injection is a procedure in which fat is taken from a donor area like the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks and then reinjected into another area of the body, in this case the lips, in order to add fullness.

Q - What is Alloderm?
Alloderm is a natural collagen sheet that, when used for lip augmentation, is inserted through tiny incisions at the corners of the mouth.

Q - What is Gore-Tex?
Gore-Tex is a synthetic implant made from expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) that may be used as an implantable sheet for lip augmentation.

Q - What is fascia?
Fascia is derived from donor-fascia, which is connective tissue made of collagen, and may be used as an implantable sheet for lip augmentation.

Q - What is Radiance?
Radiance is an injectable filler made of calcium hydroxylapatite, a substance found in bone and teeth, and it may be used to enhance the lips.

Q - What is Restylane?
Restylane is an injectable filler made of non-animal derived hyaluronic acid. It may be used to enhance the lips.

Q - What happens during the lip augmentation consultation?
During the consultation, your lips will be examined, your medical history taken, and your goals discussed. A treatment plan will be recommended and all details of the procedure explained including the anesthesia, the recovery,  the risks, and the costs.

Q - Where is lip augmentation performed.
Dr. Moynihan performs lip augmentation in his office-based facility.

Q - What is the anesthesia used for lip augmentation?
Local anesthesia is used for lip augmentation.

Q - How is lip augmentation performed?
For lip augmentation with injectable fillers, the filler is injected directly into the lips. For lip augmentation with implantable sheets, small incisions are made at the corners of the lips on the inside of the mouth and the sheets are then inserted.

Q - How long is the surgical time for lip augmentation?
Injectable filler procedures take about fifteen minutes to complete while procedure with implantable sheets may take a bit longer.

Q - Where are the incisions made for lip augmentation?
The incisions made for procedure involving implantable sheets are made on the inside of the mouth at the corners of the lips.

Q - Will I have scars after undergoing lip augmentation?
There is no visible scarring after lip augmentation.

Q - How much pain occurs with lip augmentation?
Lip augmentation is generally associated with little pain or discomfort.

Q - What is the recovery like after undergoing lip augmentation?
There is generally very little recovery associated with lip augmentation, though some minor swelling and bruising can occur during the first few days.

Q - How much time should I plan to take off from work after my lip augmentation procedure?
Patients are often able to return to work on the same day of the procedure or one day after.

Q - Are there any risks associated with lip augmentation?
All surgery carries some risk. For lip augmentation, this may include cosmetic asymmetry and granuloma formation.

Q - Will my insurance company cover the cost of lip augmentation?
Patients will need to check with their own insurer, though lip augmentation is generally not covered by insurance when performed solely for cosmetic purposes.

Q - How long do the results of lip augmentation last?
Some options for lip augmentation are temporary while others are permanent. In general, Restylane lasts for six to nine months, Fascia for six to twelve months, Alloderm and Dermaplant for up to a year, and Radiance for three to five years. The results of Gore-Tex are permanent and, after an initial shrinkage during the first three months, the results of fat injection are permanent as well.
