Facial fillers, also referred to as injectable fillers, are substances which can be injected beneath the skin to soften the appearance of wrinkles, facial scars and contour deformities. The result is a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. There are a variety of facial fillers including collagen, Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, and Radiesse.

Good candidates for facial fillers include men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of facial wrinkles. Dr. Moynihan performs facial filler procedures in his office-based facility and treatment may take as little as five to fifteen minutes complete.

Injectable collagen may be used to treat most areas of the face, including the lips. It can fill in and reduce the visibility of fine wrinkles and crow’s feet, as well as other prominent facial creases and folds around the forehead, cheeks, and chin. Collagen involves minimal side effects, though allergy testing is necessary prior to treatment. In order to maintain the desired result, treatment will need to be repeated every two to three months.

Restylane and Juvederm are injectable facial fillers comprised of hyaluronic acid gel, a naturally occurring substance that binds water to cells. Restylane can be used for a variety of creases and lines including nasal labial folds and smile lines. Juvederm can be used to correct moderate to several facial wrinkles and folds. Both fillers can also be used for lip augmentation. Side effects are generally minor and may include slight bruising or swelling. Results may last six to twelve months. Perlane is a thicker form of hyaluronic acid best used for filling in deep lines like laugh lines or sculpting facial areas like the cheek bones. The results may last up to one year.

Radiesse, formerly known as Radiance, is an injectable facial filler comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in an aqueous, polysaccharide gel. CaHA is a well-known biocompatible substance found in teeth and bone. Radiesse may be used to treat deep facial lines and folds, acne scarring, deep furrows between the brows, and facial depressions. It may also be used for lip augmentation. There is little risk of allergic reaction and results may last up to two years.

Though some minor irritation may occur at the injection site, facial fillers generally involve minimal recovery or downtime. Most patients are able to immediately return to work and other normal activities right away.
