Rhytidectomy, more commonly known as a facelift, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to tighten loose skin in the lower third of the face, the jaw line, and the neck area. Good candidates for a facelift include healthy men and women who have a well-defined bony structure but are looking to improve sagging skin of the face and neck. The best results tend to be achieved in patients with neck and cheek laxity with a strong or prominent underlying bony structure.

Dr. Moynihan performs the facelift in an outpatient surgical center. The procedure takes two to four hours to complete and may be performed with sedation, general anesthesia or local anesthesia. The incision for a facelift begins in the hair above the ear and continues in front of and around the ear, finishing behind the ear at the hairline. Once the incision is made, permanent sutures are used to tighten the underlying musculature and liposuction is used to remove excess fat in the neck.

Recovery after a facelift takes about one to two weeks. Some swelling, bruising and numbness may occur, and the bruising can take about two to three weeks to fade. Any discomfort that patients experience can be controlled with medication. Bandages applied after surgery may be removed within one to five days, while stitches are removed in one week. Patients can return to work within one to two weeks, which is mostly dependent upon how quickly the bruising is resolved. Light exercise may be resumed at the end of the first week and more strenuous activities after two weeks.
