Q - What is Botox? Botox is a non-surgical injection able to temporarily reduce or eliminate certain facial wrinkles including prominent forehead creases, brow furrows, and crow’s feet. Botox, or Botulinum toxin, is a sterile, purified protein that is produced in a laboratory from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Botox is also able to treat migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and muscle spasm in the neck and eyes.
Q - How does Botox work? Botox is injected into specific facial expression muscles responsible for repeated creasing of the skin, resulting in wrinkles and creases. Once injected, the muscle is temporarily reduced or paralyzed.
Q - Who is a good candidate for Botox? Men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of forehead creases, brow furrows, and/or crow’s feet may be good candidates for Botox treatment. Botox can also treat migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and muscle spasm in the neck and eyes.

Q - What type of anesthesia is used for the Botox procedure? Botox treatment does not require anesthesia, though the injection can be numbed prior to the injection.
Q - How is the Botox injection performed? Botox is injected with a needle in small amounts into the specific facial muscles. This temporarily weakens or paralyzes the muscles, reducing or eliminating previous skin creasing while preventing new skin creasing.
Q - How long is the procedure time for Botox treatment? Treatment with Botox takes just a few minutes to complete.
Q - How much pain occurs with Botox treatment? There is generally little discomfort associated with the Botox injection.
Q - What is the recovery like after the Botox injection? Recovery after Botox treatment is minimal with virtually no downtime. Patients may experience some minor irritation at the injection site which typically dissipates within a few hours. It may take several days after treatment before the Botox takes effect. Results generally last three to six months.
Q - Will I need to take off from work after the Botox injection? Though patients may experience some minor irritation at the injection site, work and other normal activities can typically be resumed immediately after treatment.
Q - Are there any risks of undergoing Botox treatment? Potential risks associated with Botox may include bruising, numbness, droopy eyelids, the body may become immune, allergic reaction, temporary eyelid droop, nausea, headache, respiratory infection, and flu syndrome.
Q - Will my insurance company cover the cost of the Botox procedure? Patients will need to check with their own insurer. In general, Botox is usually not covered when performed for cosmetic purposes though some coverage may be available when treating facial scars or contour deformities resulting from injury.
Q - How long do the results of Botox last? The results of Botox may last three to six months. |
