Blepharoplasty, also known as an eye lift, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to improve the appearance of the eyes. The procedure may correct puffiness and depressions of the lower eyelids, as well as excess skin and/or fullness of the upper eyelids. Blepharoplasty may be performed on just the upper eyelids, just the lower eyelids, or on both. Good candidates for blepharoplasty include men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of the eyes. Patients with chronic dry eyes or certain thyroid disorders may not be appropriate candidates.
Dr. Moynihan performs lower eyelid blepharoplasty in an outpatient surgical center, while upper eyelid blepharoplasty may be performed in an outpatient center or in his office-based facility. The procedure may take one to two hours to complete and can be performed with sedation, local anesthesia, or general anesthesia.
The incisions for blepharoplasty are placed on the inside of the lower eyelids and within the natural crease of the upper eyelids. The lower eyelids are corrected by repositioning fat, while the upper eyelids are corrected by removing excess skin and small portions of redundant muscle and protruding fat.
Recovery after blepharoplasty takes about one week. The eyelids may feel sore or tight, and any discomfort that patients experience can be controlled with medication. Swelling and bruising may also occur. Patients are usually able to resume work and light exercise within one week, though more strenuous activities will need to be postponed for about two weeks.
